Man breaks into police station, retrieves seized bicycle

A man allegedly broke into a police department’s evidence area to take back his bicycle.

David Elwin Snow, 37, showed up at the Provo Police Department in Utah, USA, on December 18, asking for his bike, which had been recovered from a man who was arrested in an unrelated issue, reports said.

Snow had not reported the bike stolen, however, so police needed to verify that the bike was his, before giving it to him, the Desert News reported.

Snow and his brother were allegedly able to see where the bike was stored in an outdoor area, according to a police report. Police said later that night, the men returned to take it back.

“This is a first,” Provo Police Sgt. Nisha King told the Desert News.

“Police didn’t know the bike was gone until the man originally accused of stealing the bike was arrested again and told authorities he’d heard that two men had gotten the bicycle out of the police station.

“Snow’s brother had been bragging that they (the brothers) had ‘pulled off the crime of the century and broken into the police department,” according to a police report.

Snow was then arrested. No charges have been filed in the case, however; the paper said.

21 beggars arrested on one week

Kano State Hisbah Board said on Tuesday that it had arrested 21 beggars for allegedly violating the law banning street begging in the state in one week.

Malam Umar Yahaya, the Public Relations Officer of the Board, disclosed this while speaking in Kano.

Yahaya said that the suspects were arrested in different raids in the metropolis, adding that eight of them were children, while 13 were adults.

The public relations officer explained that the arrests were carried out in areas around Bata, Bank and Kabuga roads.

He added that the board had released 11 of them after being identified as first time offenders, while the rest 10 were taken to court.

Yahaya enjoined beggars to acquire vocational skills to sustain themselves rather than rely on street begging for livelihood.

Hisbah is the enforcement arm of Sharia Law.

Parents arrested after their 13 children are found bound and shakled

Two parents have been arrested after 13 of their children were shackled to beds inside their home in California, police say.

The victims, all siblings aged between two and 29 years old, were being held captive at the home of David Allen Turpin, 57, and Louise Anna Turpin, 49, in Perris, California, police said.

Riverside County Sheriff's Department began investigating after a 17-year-old girl freed herself, escaped the home and called the police on a cell phone she stole from inside the property on Sunday morning, cops said.

The teenager, who was so emaciated police thought she was just 10 years old, told cops her 12 siblings were being held inside the home at 160 Muir Woods Road.

State records appear to suggest David Turpin home-schools his six children at their address - calling it Sandcastle Day School - however this has not been confirmed.

Officers arrived at the home early on Sunday morning and found several children and adults chained and padlocked to beds in a foul-smelling room.

They were malnourished, dirty and all of them have been hospitalized, police said.

The victims were given food and drinks and Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services will care for them once they are well enough to be released from hospital.
Police initially thought all of the victims were children but soon discovered seven were adults.

Mr and Mrs Turpin were arrested and charged with nine counts of torture and 10 of child endangerment. Neither of them have a serious criminal record.

The couple are being held at Robert Presley Detention Center east of Los Angeles and their bail has been set at $9million. They will appear in court on Thursday.

This was my first attempt- Libyan deportee arrested for robbery

No fewer than 62 persons, including a Libyan deportee, Destiny Kelly, have been arrested by the Edo State Police Command for various criminal offences in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, who disclosed this to journalists, explained that the suspects were arrested between December, 2017 and January, 2018.

Kokumo stated that the police command recovered several items, including seven AK47 rifles, one pump-action gun, 34 cut-to-size guns, one toy gun, a machete and a face mask, from the suspected criminals.

He also said seven operational vehicles used by the suspects were recovered.

The Libyan deportee, Kelly, he said, was picked up by policemen on December 2, 2017, along with his accomplices, for allegedly abducting and robbing a female corps member.

The two accomplices were identified as Christopher Agbonugo, 29, and Endurance Aburimeh, 23.

Aburimeh confessed that the gang picked up their victim, one Joseph Jennifer, at Ramat Park, en route to Ring Road.

He explained that his gang member, Agbonugo, posed as a cab operator, while Kelly and himself (Aburimeh) pretended to be passengers.

He said as the car approached the Ikpoba slope area, the suspects tortured their victim and forced her to surrender her mobile phone, N4,000 cash and ATM card.

However, they were said to have run out of luck when the victim’s phone was tracked by the police, leading to Christopher’s arrest.

Narrating her ordeal, Jennifer said the hoodlums failed in their bid to empty her bank account as it had not been authorised for withdrawals.

She said, “I was coming from Uromi, so the bus driver dropped us at Ramat Park. I needed to take a taxi to Ring Road. As I was inside (the taxi) around Ikpoba slope, suddenly, I felt a shock and before I knew it, my head was between the legs of one of them.

“They started to hit me on the head. The more I begged, the more they hit me. So, I gave them my bag and everything. One of them went to the bank to collect money from my bank account but he could not collect money.
“They became angry and beat and tortured me in the car. Even I could not withdraw money from the account because the Federal Government just paid money into the account and had not opened it for my use.”

Kelly, who said he was deported from Libya in February, 2017, claimed to have engaged in robbery only once.

“I spent about four years in Libya but I was deported. That robbery was my first attempt. We planned to collect her phone and we did,” he added.

The Commissioner of Police, Kokumo, said the suspects specialised in robbing unsuspecting passengers and had confessed to the crime.

Kokumo said, “Through intelligence-led policing, they (suspects) were established as authors of the crime. They have also confessed.

“They had an Audi 80 car, as an operational vehicle. They pretended as if they were operators to unsuspecting commuters. They picked them up and rob them of their valuables.”

French referee loses temper, kicks player before sending him off

Referee Tony Chapron became the pantomime villain of Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-0 win at Nantes on Sunday, after responding to an accidental collision with Diego Carlos by kicking the Brazilian and sending him off.

In injury time and with PSG on the counter-attack, Chapron stepped across the backtracking Nantes centre-back Carlos and tumbled to the floor.

The official stunned the stadium and those watching at home by kicking out at Carlos while still on the ground, in an incident reminiscent of David Beckham at the 1998 World Cup, before brandishing a second yellow card at the unfortunate player.

“He told me that he had never wanted to kick the player and that he had felt himself pushed in the back,” said Nantes president Waldemar Kita after talking to Chapron.
“It’s a joke. I got 20 text messages from across the world telling me this referee is a joke,” Kita told French TV. “What do you want me to say? If I speak too much I’ll be called in front of an ethics commission. We have no right to say anything.”

Nantes midfielder Valentin Rongier had a good view of the incident and called for the referee to be given a lengthy ban.

“He says he slipped, but I know he kicked him,” Rongier told Canal+.

“I know it’s very difficult to referee but you have to question them from time to time… We do that, we get a 10-match ban.”

Former England striker Gary Lineker and ex-Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas were among those to express their bemusement on Twitter.

“Surely the good man will have apologised. It was spontaneous,” wrote Casillas.

“Yes, for me it’s aggression and red! Three matches minimum!”
